The Supreme Court issued a notice to the Centre and National Medical Commission (NMC) in view of all these to clarify the matter. Now, a reply from NMC and Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) by July 26, 2024, is awaited to bring more clarity on the exact reasons for the exam's postponement.

INTRODUCTION

The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to the Centre on a PIL challenging the indefinite postponement of the NEET Super Speciality Examination 2024. The PIL challenges this postponement, alleging arbitrary and irrational action, causing undue stress and uncertainty amongst the candidates who have made considerable personal and professional sacrifices in pursuing this examination.

While the hearing was underway, the three-judge bench headed by the Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud asked what the reason behind the postponement was. The counsel of the petitioners pointed out that the postponement interferes with a fixed timeline for such examinations laid down by a top court verdict. According to the petitioners, delay causes not only a problem for the candidates but also leads to harm to the care of the patient.

The National Medical Commission (NMC) and the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) have been asked to respond to the notice by July 26, 2024. According to the petitioners, this postponement is contrary to the principles of natural justice and has disturbed the professional lives of doctors. It is submitted that the doctors who intend to appear for the exam have to leave behind the jobs and also do not take up any fresh assignments.

CONCLUSION

The NEET Super Specialty Examination is the entrance examination for admitting doctors to super-specialty courses. Right from the indefinite postponement, there were concerns raised by the medical fraternity and many people urged that the problem needs to be solved clearly and on time.
