When Justice Hima Kohli retires on September 1, 2024, the supreme court will have 34 judges in place. CJI Chandrachud will superannuate on November 10 of this year. On July 11, the chief justice of India-chaired five-member collegium recommended Singh and Mahadevan's names to the center for elevation to the supreme court. Judge N Kotiswar Singh, the chief justice of the jammu and kashmir high court, is the first manipur judge to be appointed to the highest court. In July, the SC collegium announced, on the basis of justice Mahadevan's recommendation and his own name, that the north-east would be represented by his appointment as a supreme court judge. Specifically, he will be the first judge from the state of Manipur to hold this office. Judge Singh was appointed to the gauhati high court in october 2011. After the Manipur high court was established, he was transferred there. He was appointed chief justice of the jammu and kashmir and ladakh high court in february 2023, and he will step down from his position in february 2028 when he turns 65.Currently serving as the madras high court's acting chief justice is justice mahadevan.
The collegium had stated that justice mahadevan "belongs to a backward community from the state of tamil nadu" when recommending his name for elevation. The (SC) bench will become more diverse with his appointment."The collegium has duly noted that justice mahadevan is currently serving as the third most senior member of the judges of the madras high court including the judges who have been posted as chief justices outside the madras high court. " In order to provide representation for the underprivileged community, the collegium has given justice mahadevan's candidacy priority at this time," the statement stated.
